How to Install a Door Lock

Intermediate 30 minutes - 1 hour Locksmith

Introduction

Whether you are upgrading an old lock for better security or replacing one that has worn out, installing a door lock is a satisfying project that improves your home security. NYC apartments typically require specific lock types — most buildings mandate a deadbolt in addition to the knob lock on entry doors, and NYC tenants have the legal right to install an additional lock at their own expense. This guide covers replacing an existing lock with a new one of the same type, which is the most common scenario.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Step 1 Choose the Right Replacement Lock

Measure your door thickness — standard is one-and-three-eighths inches, but older NYC apartment doors may be thicker. Measure the backset — the distance from the door edge to the center of the lock hole — which is typically two-and-three-eighths or two-and-three-quarters inches. Buy a lock that matches these measurements to use the existing holes. For NYC apartment entry doors, choose a lock rated ANSI Grade 1 or Grade 2 for security. If you are adding a deadbolt where none existed, you will need to drill new holes, which is covered below.

  2. Step 2 Remove the Existing Lock

Remove any visible screws on the interior side of the lock. Many locks have a small release slot or tab on the interior rose plate — insert a flathead screwdriver or the included tool to release it. Once the interior knob or lever is off, remove the rose plate to access the mounting screws. Unscrew the mounting plate and pull both halves of the lock apart. Remove the latch bolt from the edge of the door by unscrewing its faceplate. Keep all old hardware until the new lock is confirmed working.

  3. Step 3 Install the New Latch and Exterior Component

Insert the new latch bolt into the edge hole of the door with the angled face of the bolt pointing toward the door frame — this allows the door to close without turning the knob. Secure with the provided screws. Insert the exterior portion of the lock through the latch mechanism, ensuring the tailpiece or connecting bar passes through the latch. Align everything so the lock sits flush against the door face. If the new lock requires a slightly larger hole, wrap sandpaper around a dowel and carefully enlarge it.

  4. Step 4 Attach the Interior Component

Place the interior mounting plate over the connecting hardware and secure it to the exterior half using the provided screws. Tighten evenly — alternating between screws to ensure the lock pulls together straight. Attach the interior knob, lever, or thumbturn, engaging it with the tailpiece. Make sure the lock operates smoothly from both sides before fully tightening everything. Test the key from outside and the thumbturn from inside. The bolt should extend and retract smoothly without sticking or grinding.

  5. Step 5 Adjust the Strike Plate

Close the door and test the lock. If the bolt does not engage the strike plate smoothly, you may need to adjust its position. Mark where the bolt contacts the frame, then reposition the strike plate. For minor misalignment, enlarge the strike plate opening with a file. For larger adjustments, unscrew the plate, fill old screw holes with wood and glue, and remount. Install a reinforced strike plate with three-inch screws that reach the door frame stud — this dramatically improves kick-in resistance, an important security measure for NYC ground-floor apartments.
